Here's what people are saying about Arguing with God:
Witty, literate and thought provoking.
Bravo John for such an impressive presentation. (We) couldn’t get over how much preparation and thought went into putting on your splendid presentation.
The eternal questions need revisiting with sensitivity, humor...and stone! What a gift you gave us at your incomparable place, in real/transcendent time and with such energy. A memorable occasion and all felt fortunate to listen and watch as the centuries and truths flew by.
It was a Herculean effort... John Henry is a special commodity.
Sweetly done.
It's nice (and all too rare!) to participate in a project with a compelling message.
(The) carefully selected synopsis of the Old Testament with clear emphasis on the important contribution of Women to uphold the concept of Justice was very convincing. (The) enthusiastic and serious cast were clearly taken with the spirit of the drama and their contribution to serious biblical truth.
The production has enriched the life of everyone associated with it.
Thank you for your hard work, your creativity, your charismatic engaging of so many friends to bring this forward. It's not everyone who asks these questions.
With a cast of 50, Arguing with God is a dramatic demonstration of America's imperial presidency as a direct descendant of the Old Testament’s Chosen People. Inspired by the precedents of Jefferson, Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Twain, the play reinterprets biblical stories to discover the link with contemporary convictions and politics. Arguing with God highlights the narcissistic tribalism fueling the chronic warfare that bedevils the United States.
The playwright is the son of an Episcopal minister and a devout Christian mother. John Henry read the Bible cover to cover every year growing up. A half century later, when he reread it, he found himself shocked by the violence of the Old Testament. Arguing with God is his interpretation of the books of Moses and their relevance to America’s role in the world. The play is directed by the Washington area’s most distinguished director, Rick Davis, Dean of College of Visual and Performing Arts at George Mason University. Rick directed Jim Reston's other two plays at Stone Hill.
